Reusable Wrapping Paper Collection - Fabric Wrapping Paper - Set of 3
These pretty and colourful pieces of fabric paper will save you time, money, effort and resources this Christmas while also providing a luxurious, stunning and zero waste approach to Christmas. We know that you’re going to fall in love with them…
The inspiration behind our reusable wrapping paper...
After researching more about the impact that Christmas has on our planet, we were compelled to create items that help to reduce waste and take care of the planet during the festive season and our pieces of Fabric Wrapping Paper just happen to be one of those items. Did you know that each year, an estimated 30 million trees are cut down just to produce Christmas wrapping paper?
This not only leads to deforestation but it also contributes to overflowing landfills and prevents an approximate 30 million tonnes of carbon dioxide being sequestered from the environment by those trees (this is based on the statistic that one tree can absorb one tonne of carbon dioxide over a 40 year period). Because of these eye-opening statistics, we thought it was about time that we create an alternative and re-usable solution that not only keeps waste out of landfill but also prevents additional waste from being created and ensures the survival of more trees.

Our reusable wrapping paper - The story behind the art...
If you’ve already browsed across a few of our sustainable and ethical products, it’s no secret that we do absolutely all we can to tread lightly on the earth and give back to our community. The story behind our Fabric Wrapping Paper pieces stems from our desire to do more for the planet whilst sharing the inspiration, advice and resources necessary for the people around us to implement change. Each and every day we recognise new issues that need to be tackled, or previously recognised problems that have become more urgent (this includes plastic pollution, carbon emissions, excessive waste and climate change) and so are always creating new and practical ways of making a difference.
We’re proud of the creation of our Fabric Wrapping Paper pieces because purchasing second-hand fabric from op shops is helping to support the local economy and the respective charities, we are able to keep additional waste out of landfill due to the fact that if items aren’t sold for a period of time, they’re thrown out from op shops regardless and the utilisation of 100% natural materials (that would also otherwise be put into landfill) means that no carbon emissions are created in the process. On top of this, each and every piece of Fabric Wrapping Paper has been ethically crafted with love and can be used for birthday gifts, Christmas presents, bouquets of flowers, thank you gifts and gift boxes.

Wondering how our reusable wrapping paper is created?
While we source all our fabric for the Fabric Wrapping Paper from second-hand shops, there is a lot more to the creation process than most people realise. We make regular trips to Brisbane second-hand shops to source pieces of white fabric that is thick enough to last years and be used a million times over. These pieces of fabric are usually in the form of tablecloths, seconds pieces from factories who have donated them and curtains. Once we have selected a small collection of fabrics, we then take them back to our little workshop in the rainforest and cut them into the required sizes (we ensure that during the cutting process, no waste is created, meaning that the sizes vary slightly between our fabric wrapping paper pieces.
We’ll never cut them smaller than the stated size in the product description, but on occasion you may receive one that’s bigger!). Once the cutting process is complete, we then get to work create our natural and botanical dyes. For this step of the process, we source the outer leaves of red cabbage, onion skins, blueberries, avocado seeds, coffee grinds, beetroot skins and other food waste items from our local fruit shops and cafés and then use a second hand pot to boil the water, add the ingredients and let the colours leech into the water.
The dyes usually take between 2-3 hours to get to the desired colour and then we allow our fabric pieces to soak for around 12 hours while we intermittently stir them, before hanging them outside our workshop to dry in the shade. When the fabric pieces are dry, we then bring them back inside to hem the edges with our trusty little sewing machine. After this last process is complete, we then fold each piece of fabric wrapping paper and pair them with two other pieces of different sizes and colours before placing them on one of our workshop shelves until they are ready to be shipped.

Either way, we’ll make sure they’re carefully packed away and will include a handwritten note thanking you for support sustainability and ethicality, a surprise present and an invitation to join the Sophia. Sisterhood of Sustainability – we don’t want to give too much away but we know that you’re going to love being involved in all the wonderful events and projects that we have planned for you…
We then use Sendle to deliver all our parcels from our workshop door to yours because they offset all carbon emissions created during delivery by supporting reforestation and conservation projects. While other brands might not give a second thought to how their items are packaged and shipped, it is so important to us because we know we have the ability to make a positive impact at each step of the process. Did you know that for each purchase, we also remove 100 pieces of rubbish from the environment on your behalf? The data obtained from the rubbish collection is then submitted to the Clean Up Australia Day organisation so that the appropriate research can be done and manufacturers can be educated on their environmental impact. Even though your purchase may be small, in reality, it’s making a huge difference!
