The inspiration behind our organic textiles...
The intriguing but humble bee was the inspiration behind our honey coloured linen napkins, because of their hugely important role within the eco-system and their incredible ability to create delicious honey. You may be wondering why bees are so important for our earth and our people and here’s why: At least 30% of the worlds crops and 90% of all plants require cross-pollination to spread and thrive which means that bees are vital for allowing our food to grow and creating the precious oxygen we breathe. We literally cannot survive without bees and so we thought it was about time that we dedicate one of our sustainably and ethically created designs to them…
Our organic textiles - The story behind the art...
Our workshop is situated on the verge of a luscious rainforest and a freshwater creek, in Brisbane and on the other side of that creek, there are a whole host of European and native bee hives. From our workshop, we can see them zooming in and out of the hives and on a warm day, they work like crazy from dawn until dusk. We’re in awe of how hard they work and what a huge difference they are able to make our planet. Every month or so, the honey gets harvested from the hives and each batch tastes so delicious but entirely different to the last harvest. Bees really are incredible and we are so grateful for them!
Wondering how our organic textiles are created?
Because we use natural and botanical dyes for our Honey Linen Napkins, we first need to create the dye inside our workshop before the napkins can be designed. For this particular shade of honey, we use onion skins which have been sourced from our local fruit shop so that we can save additional waste from ending up in landfill and utilise a valuable but often dismissed, resource. We also use a sprinkle of organic turmeric powder to increase the vibrancy of the dye and then place all ingredients into our large pot (which has been purchased from a second-hand shop in Brisbane).
The dye takes about 3 hours to get to the desired colour shade and then we allow the organic linen and pieces of 100% recycled fabric to soak in the mixture for an average of 12 hours. By allowing the fabric to soak for such a long period of time, the colour can properly bond to it and create beautifully coloured pieces as the finished product. After the soaking process, we hang the fabric outside our workshop to naturally dry in the sunshine and forest breeze and then eventually bring it back into the studio to begin sewing.
Each edge is carefully hemmed and each loose thread removed before the napkins are ready to be folded and stored on our workshop shelves. We also ensure that the whole creation process is completely zero waste by composting the onion skins and using the leftover dye to water the native Australian trees around our workshop. On top of this, no textile waste is created in the process as every little spare piece has been incorporated into our designs through the hemming process.

Upon opening the parcel, you’ll also find that we’ve included an extra little gift as well as an invitation to join The Sophia. Sisterhood of Sustainability.
