The inspiration behind our zero waste textiles...
While we learn more and more about the amount of waste that is sent to landfill each year and how much pollution is created, we become more and more inspired to make a positive difference and to do our part to reduce those statistics.
Part of our inspiration for these Honey Linen Napkins came from this desire to make a difference and our idea was to utilise natural and recycled materials and botanical items that would otherwise end up in landfill to create something new, beautiful and reusable. Our colour palette for this design has come from the beautiful golden honey that our bees create and the silky, shiny texture that is created within each hive.

Our zero waste textiles - The story behind the art...
The link between waste and creating an entirely new product is very simple to us – if there’s an item or resource that is rendered useless or is going to be sent to landfill, we want to find a way to stop that transition and instead work towards a circular economy where resources are used indefinitely rather than being tossed away at the earliest convenience. It’s no secret that the Australian textile industry sends 85% of textiles to landfill and that annually, over 5 million tonnes of food waste is produced. The creation of our Honey Linen Napkins is tackling both of these issues due to our utilisation of 100% natural and recycled materials and by salvaging natural food items such as avocado seeds, onion skins and blueberries to create natural dyes.
Wondering how our zero waste textiles are created?
To be able to create our collection of linen napkins, we first need to create our own botanical dye which is 100% natural and organic. We achieve this by sourcing onion skins from our local produce shop (because they’re going to throw them out any way and we want to save excessive waste from entering landfill, especially when it can be utilised) and taking them back to our rainforest workshop to prepare.
The skins firstly have to be boiled with a sprinkle of organic turmeric for around 3 hours to allow the colour to release into the water and then we soak our pieces of organic linen and 100% recycled fabric in the mixture for no less than 12 hours. This length of time enables the botanical dye to soak properly into the threads of fabric and bond to the material. Once the soaking process is complete, we allow the fabric to dry in the sunshine and fresh air outside of our workshop until it is ready to be sewed.
We then hand cut all the fabric into appropriate napkin sizes and hem all the edges until each napkin has been beautifully completed. During this entire creation process, we keep it entirely zero waste because every piece of fabric is utilised in our designs, the onion skins are composted afterwards and the leftover botanical dye is used to water the native trees that we have planted around our workshop. The final step is to hand fold each napkin and place on our workshop shelves until a beautiful customer like you comes along…

Although each of our homewares, stationery and giftware items are designed and created sustainably and ethically, it is also so important to us that our packaging and shipping methods align with our mission to give back to the environment and community. This is ensured by beautifully bundling our napkins together with a single strand of recycled copper wire and then placing inside either and envelope or box which is made from 100% recycled materials. To make your order even more special, we also include a special little gift just for you and an invitation to become part of our exclusive and exciting Sisterhood of Sustainability.
