The vibrant purple colouring is sure to make your day a little bit brighter too…
The inspiration behind our beautiful eco textiles...
You may be able to tell from the name, but we were inspired by purple dahlias to create this set of pretty and luxurious linen napkins. We wanted to capture the entrancing colour of the flower in an item that can be loved, cherished and used for generations whilst supporting our zero waste ethos. The creation of the dahlia inspired botanical dye came after the blush and the honey and we knew that all three colours would work beautifully together. Keep an eye out for the newest additions to our botanically and naturally dyed homewares…
Our beautiful eco textiles - The story behind the art...
Dahlias come in all shades of amazing colours and their beauty really is something to be in awe about. If you’ve never seen a dahlia before, imagine the most vibrant flower with layer upon layer of delicate petals. We like to think of each individual petal as a person and the way that something incredibly beautiful and inspiring is made when all those people are brought together. In our workshop, we are completely surrounded by nature and are always being inspired by the gorgeous colours, patterns and details that we find amongst the forest. If you’ve already explored a few of our other sustainable and ethical homewares, you might’ve already discovered that the majority of our designs have been inspired by our natural surroundings. Dahlias are special to us because we have a cute little garden bed filled with them right outside our workshop door…
Wondering how our beautiful eco textiles are created?
Just like our honey and blush coloured linen pieces, we have to create the botanical dye before we can begin the creation process and gather our collection of organic linen that has been produced in Australia and that we purchase right here in Brisbane. For the dyes, we have formed a close relationship with our local fruit shops and cafes to collect their “food waste” and utilise it before it finally becomes composted. This shade of dahlia purple has been created using blueberries (some of the older berries are unable to be sold by the fruit shops), beetroot skins (these are discarded by cafes and restaurants as they only use the inner part of the beetroot for their dishes) and red cabbage leaves (the outer leaves are also tossed away by fruit shops because they’ve usually been damaged or are dirty).
Once our natural materials have been collected, we then take them back to our workshop, boil a large pot of water (we found this really great pot from a second hand shop which we use to create all our dyes) before letting the ingredients leak their natural dyes into the water. It takes around 2-3 hours for the water to reach the desired colour and then we place our napkin sized pieces into the pot to soak for an average of 12 hours. Once the soaking process is finished, we then hang each individual napkin outside our workshop to dry in the forest breeze while we prepare our sewing machine to begin hemming the edges. We’ve created a zero waste process for our textile products so that each little thread is incorporated into the design and we ensure this by carefully hemming the edges to include the entire piece of fabric. After the sewing is complete, all that is left to do is fold each one and place them onto one of our shelves in the workshop.
