We've always been inspired by the natural world around us and this design was born through a love of the sea creatures who hide away in secret rock pools. This bright red gift card is perfect for celebrating birthdays and anniversaries and has always been a popular product in our ethical giftware collection.
The inspiration behind our interesting cards...
There are many ocean dwelling creatures that don’t get the recognition that they deserve, but the humble starfish is probably one of the most intriguing and beautiful creatures of them all. We were inspired by the two thousand different species of starfish that are found around the world, from tropical habitats to the cold sea floors. Each and every starfish is their own unique colour, shape and size (much like the human population around the globe) and while it’s most common for starfish to have five arms, some species can have up to forty! Our Ruby Starfish Gift Card has been created with a beautiful shade of crimson red and we wanted this unique piece of art to pay tribute to the incredible starfish because they are unlike any other species of fauna.
Our interesting cards - The story behind the art...
Starfish are a vital part of our oceans because they’re considered the most important predator in the shallow ecosystem due to their feeding habits. Did you also know that they make up around 95% of the marine life in the ocean? – that’s a lot of starfish! The ruby red pens that we used to create this design represent radiance, which we believe is quite fitting, considering the characteristics of different starfish dwelling in our oceans.
By sharing the story and inspiration behind each piece of art we create, we hope to open your eyes to a new perspective on our planet and create awareness for the things that are happening in the world around you. Wondering how our interesting cards are created?
The Ruby Starfish design was drawn on the coastal cliffs of Caloundra while overlooking the swirling blue waves and unique rock pools. It was hand drawn onto a piece of recycled paper, using non-toxic pens and once we arrived back in Brisbane, we delivered the design to our local printers to be transformed into gift cards. We have chosen to use a printer which is within close proximity to the Sophia. workshop because it is important to us that we support other local businesses as well as reducing travel miles and subsequently reducing our carbon emissions.
We also ethically print our gift cards in small batches to ensure that we aren’t contributing to over consumption and excess landfill. Once the cards are ready to be picked up from the printer, we then carefully hand fold each card and check for any discrepancies before storing them in our workshop away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Upon purchasing your very own Ruby Starfish Gift Card, we’ll bundle the gift card and a matching white envelope together with a beautiful piece of sparkling copper wire.
