The inspiration behind our pretty coastal homewares...
The inspiration for the Oceanic Plate came through an intense love of the deep blue sea. We wanted to represent our blue planet in a way that explores all its beauty as well as drawing our community to the centre of what really matters - the reality is that our oceans create 70%. of the oxygen we breathe and that is something that we cannot jeopardise. We've made it our mission to spread our message of sustainability and ethicality through the coastal homewares we create and the Oceanic Plate is no exception.
While this mandala plate wasn't the first design in our collection, it's one that resonates with us deeply and our customers agree. Draw your eyes to the centre of this ocean inspired plate and appreciate the intricate details that represent every special and unique part of our seas - from the rock pools filled with seaside treasures to the reefs adorned in corals and anemones to the dark blue waves that carry dolphins, whales and turtles on its tides to the depths of the ocean where jellyfish sway with the currents. Our ocean is a piece of art.

Our coastal homewares - The story behind the art...
We all love a good story and the tale behind our stunning Oceanic Plate is a beautiful one. It starts off simply because we had so many wonderful souls who suggested a blue and green colour palette. As human beings, we are attracted to blues and greens because we sub-consciously connect them to nature and nature brings calmness and serenity. Blue itself represents loyalty, strength and wisdom whereas green represents life, growth and nature. When these two beautiful and bright colours are brought together, they create a powerhouse of beauty and inspiration.
It was our dream to create a coastal homewares piece that not only represents this ocean inspired beauty but for our customers to be able to bring a little piece of the deep blue into their homes. The Oceanic Plate is a daily reminder that our wide, open earth is a precious and fragile place that needs our protection.

Wondering how our pretty coastal homewares are created?
Each and every one of our mandala plates have been hand designed right here in Brisbane, Australia by using a paper template. The outline for the artwork is constructed first with no preconceived idea on how it is actually going to turn out. It simply starts with a dot in the centre of the page and then the array of patterns swirl out from there.
We use non-toxic pens to fill the black template in and for this Oceanic Plate, we decided to use different hues of blue, green and purple to create the desired ocean effect. This particular plate took a total of 13 hours to design and complete so you can only imagine the focus and intricacy of details that went into its creation.
We then send our designs off to an Australian owned company who run their entire factory off solar power and use recycled packaging to send their orders out. While these plates are made from melamine, we've weighed up their impact and the fact that they're unbreakable and fade resistant, means that they'll last a lifetime, therefore becoming sustainable in their ability to perform their duty time and time again without waste.

Sustainable shipping & packaging - From Sophia. to you...
Upon your purchase of the Oceanic Plate, Team Sophia. carefully and lovingly package your order into a handmade cardboard box which has been crafted from 100% recycled cardboard. We also include a personalised and handwritten note welcoming you into The Sophia. Sisterhood of Sustainability and thanking you for your sustainable and ethical purchase.
From there, we use Sendle - an Australian owned courier company whom are entirely carbon neutral. They ensure this by partnering with South Pole Group to offset the emissions from every parcel that is picked up and delivered by Sendle. They are currently supporting conservation projects in the Annya State Forest.
Not only are our parcels sent carbon neutral, but here at Sophia. we also remove one hundred pieces of rubbish from our waterways and bushland on behalf of each customer and plant one tree for each shipment.
