The inspiration behind our environmentally friendly textiles...
The intriguing but humble bee was the inspiration behind our honey coloured linen tablecloths, because of their hugely important role within the eco-system and their incredible ability to create delicious honey. You may be wondering why bees are so important for our earth and our people and here’s why: At least 30% of the world crops and 90% of all plants require cross-pollination to spread and thrive which means that bees are vital for allowing our food to grow and creating the precious oxygen we breathe. We literally cannot survive without bees and so we thought it was about time that we dedicate one of our sustainably and ethically created designs to them…
Environmentally friendly textiles - The story behind the art...
The link between waste and creating an entirely new product is very simple to us – if there’s an item or resource that is rendered useless or is going to be sent to landfill, we want to find a way to stop that transition and instead work towards a circular economy where resources are used indefinitely rather than being tossed away at the earliest convenience. It’s no secret that the Australian textile industry sends 85% of textiles to landfill and that annually, over 5 million tonnes of food waste is produced. The creation of our Honey Linen Tablecloths are tackling both of these issues due to our utilisation of 100% natural and recycled materials and by salvaging natural food items such as avocado seeds, onion skins and blueberries to create natural dyes.
Wondering how our environmentally friendly textiles are created?
To be able to create our collection of linen tablecloths, we first need to create our own botanical dye which is 100% natural and organic. We achieve this by sourcing onion skins from our local produce shop (because they’re going to throw them out any way and we want to save excessive waste from entering landfill, especially when it can be utilised) and taking them back to our rainforest workshop to prepare.
The skins firstly have to be boiled with a sprinkle of organic turmeric for around 3 hours to allow the colour to release into the water and then we soak our pieces of organic linen and 100% recycled fabric in the mixture for no less than 12 hours. This length of time enables the botanical dye to soak properly into the threads of fabric and bond to the material. Once the soaking process is complete, we allow the fabric to dry in the sunshine and fresh air outside of our workshop until it is ready to be sewed.
We then hand cut all the fabric into appropriate sizes and hem all the edges until each tablecloth has been beautifully completed. During this entire creation process, we keep it entirely zero waste because every piece of fabric is utilised in our designs, the onion skins are composted afterwards and the leftover botanical dye is used to water the native trees that we have planted around our workshop. The final step is to hand fold each tablecloth and place on our workshop shelves until a beautiful customer like you comes along…

Ethical shipping & packaging - From Sophia. to you...
After receiving your order for a beautiful botanically dyed Honey Linen Tablecloth, we will carefully hand fold it and bundle it together with a sparkling strand of recycled copper wire. Because of the soft nature of the fabric, they don’t need any additional protection (unlike our plates and notebooks so we place them directly into an envelope or box made from 100% recycled materials). We then use Sendle to deliver our parcels from our quaint workshop in Brisbane to your door. Upon opening the parcel, you’ll also find that we’ve included an extra little gift as well as an invitation to join The Sophia. Sisterhood of Sustainability.
The Sisterhood is a community we have created with inspiring women from around the world with the sole purpose of encouraging others to lead sustainable and ethical lives. It’s free to join and as a member, you’ll have the chance to share your own knowledge and advice, enter exclusive eco competitions and become involved in our exciting events and projects. As part of our commitment to sustainability and ethicality, we also remove 100 pieces of rubbish from the environment on your behalf. The tally of how much rubbish has been removed so far is live on our home page and all data from the rubbish collection is submitted to the Clean Up Australia Day organisation to be officially recognised and to help tackle plastic pollution around Australia.
