The inspiration behind our bespoke home decor...
We know that our customers love getting a behind the scenes snapshot of how our products are created and what they’re inspired by and so like to share the story behind each and every one of our sustainable and ethical products. This helps our community to gain a better understanding on how they can make a positive difference for our planet as well as how they can support sustainability and ethicality. The inspiration for our Avery Baskets was found within our native Australian birds and the freedom they experience as well as a few of our previous handcrafted copper homeware pieces.
Bespoke home decor - The story behind the art...
Our quaint workshop is situated on the edge of a lush rainforest and next to a freshwater creek in Brisbane and so we always have encounters with beautiful native birds that either fly past our windows, nest in the trees above or swim past us in the creek. We believe that birds are the ultimate symbol of freedom as they have the ability to fly whenever and wherever they like! It’s because of this reason that our Avery Baskets do not have the tops enclosed because we wanted to symbolise the freedom they experience by not confining them to a cage. Of course, these baskets are not suitable to keep a bird in (nor were they designed to do so) and we believe that they’re supposed to fly free…
Wondering how our bespoke home decor is created?
As you may already know, all of our copper homeware creations are made to order, so that you’re receiving a special product that has been designed just for you. We prepare all our recycled copper wire ahead of time though to make sure that we can create your basket as soon as possible and deliver it to you entirely carbon neutral. The preparation process involves stripping and untwisting every individual strand of wire and you’d be surprised how much is actually needed for an individual basket.
The basket is started off by creating a skeleton with our thicker selection of wire to ensure that the basket is strong and durable and then we use a thinner strand of wire to begin our weaving from the centre, towards the outside. For our medium sized baskets, the weaving takes about 8 hours and then we finish it off with a beautiful braided edge before checking the basket over for any less-than-perfect sections. These are then rectified (if any are found) before getting the basket ready to ship.

Carbon neutral shipping & packaging - From Sophia. to you...
Once your Avery Baskets have been created and are ready for shipping, we place them into a recycled cardboard box and use sheets of newspaper or recycled shredded paper to protect the copper pieces. We’ll also include a handwritten note thanking you for your sustainable and ethical purchase and an invitation to The Sophia. Sisterhood of Sustainability. In case you haven’t heard yet, the Sisterhood is a community that’s been created by us with the purpose of inspiring women from around the world to lead sustainable and ethical lifestyles while providing the knowledge and resources necessary to implement change.

About the Collection - Bespoke Home Decor
Our specialty is handcrafted homewares with a sustainable twist and our copper homewares collection aligns perfectly with our mission to reduce waste and provide beautiful products.
Each copper bowl and plate has been created with 100% recycled copper wire and it takes up to 30 hours for one piece to be completed.
