Bigger isn't always better but when it comes to our large copper plates, this is certainly the case. You won't be able to get enough of the gorgeous copper hues and we're telling you now that this plate is going to look amazing right in the centre of your dining table.
The inspiration behind our beautiful tableware...
The real question is, what ISN’T inspiring about the sparkling magic of copper? We are constantly in awe of the way copper can be used for a multitude of different uses and obviously because of its beautiful appearance too. Much like our copper bowls, which were the first piece in this collection, we were inspired by the way something that is at the end of its life and is no longer unusable for its intended purpose, can be so magically transformed into a new and beautiful item.
The entirety of our copper collection is based on our core belief of sustainable living and we hope that our inspiration is passed onto you through this copper plate and helps you to find other unused materials in your life that can be recreated into something wonderful. We will forever be mesmerised by the way a million and one different strands of copper can be brought together to create a strong and beautiful piece of art; much like the way that if a million and one people were to make just one small difference to their lifestyle, together we can make a huge impact.

Beautiful tableware - The story behind the art...
The initial idea behind these plates was to create a quality and luxurious item that could be used for wedding celebrations and to bring an extra shimmer and shine to an already special day. They were designed with the main purpose of being charger plates for displaying under crisp, white ceramics but since their initial creation, the ideas have continued to flow. We’ve seen our wonderful customers use these large copper plates for a multitude of different purposes including, displays for vases filled with flowers, a tray for bread rolls and croissants, a centrepiece on the coffee table and even as a unique wall decoration. No matter what you decide to use your sustainable and handcrafted copper plate for, it is sure to fill the space with a magical sparkle that will never grow dull. We’ve also got an interesting fact to share about these unique plates – each one contains over fifty metres of wire from start to finish!
Wondering how our beautiful tableware is created?
With all of our copper homewares being created with 100% recycled copper wire, we need to source all materials from local electrical companies who are constantly collecting offcuts that are too short to be used. These pieces of copper would usually be sent off to a metal recycler where it undergoes a rigorous process to melt the plastic off before getting the copper to a high enough temperature to melt and remould. This process creates excessive carbon emissions whereas the “recycling” process we use requires no additional manufacturing. Upon receiving the electrical wire from local suppliers, we then have to strip all the plastic coating off by hand, which we then donate to our local school to be used in craft projects.
The next step in the process is to untwist all the strands of wire from each other before re-twisting the ends together to make a long piece of wire that we’re able to work with. We then carefully handcraft the plate by twisting and weaving the recycled copper wire into the desired shape and although the whole process can take in excess of 15 hours, you’ll be able to tell by the finished product that the hard work is worth it!

Carbon neutral shipping & packaging - From Sophia. to you...
Every one of our handcrafted copper plates are made to order so as soon as you decide that you’d like one for your own home, we get busily to work creating a one of a kind creation just for you. We prepare the recycled copper wire ahead of time so that we’re able to get the finished product to you faster but because each one is made to order, the delivery does take a little longer than ordinary.
After approximately 12 hours of twisting and weaving, your copper plate will be finished and ready for shipping which means we’re able to package it up in a 100% recycled cardboard box. We also include a handwritten note inside your delivery thanking you for supporting sustainability and ethicality and also welcoming you into our community of eco conscious women: The Sophia. Sisterhood of Sustainability We then use Sendle (an Australian owned, carbon neutral shipping company) to deliver your lovingly crafted copper plate to your door and also remove one hundred pieces of rubbish from our waterways and bushland on your behalf. These are just a few of the ways that we ensure Sophia. is as sustainable and as ethical as possible while also supporting the ‘slow living’ movement.

About the Collection - Beautiful Tableware
Our specialty is handcrafted homewares with a sustainable twist and our copper homewares collection aligns perfectly with our mission to reduce waste and provide beautiful products.
Each copper bowl and plate has been created with 100% recycled copper wire and it takes up to 30 hours for one piece to be completed. It's a long process from the stripping of the wire, the untwisting, the re-twisting and then the weaving into the beautiful finished product but we believe that quality homewares come from hard work, attention to detail and quality control.
